TEACHING PRACTICE

Here I am on my first day of teaching! I am very excited! I have prepared my teaching plan, instructional materials, and powerpoint presentation. Hello Grade 4A! Teacher Kat is ready!

When I entered the classroom, there were no students because they were outside to do the preliminaries. After the preliminaries, the students went back to their classroom, fix themselves and organized their things. Then, my cooperating teacher introduced me to them. Now, the floor is mine.

I started by introducing myself. "Hello! Selamat pagi! I am Katline Cleo Estrada and I am a pre-service teacher from the Philippines. I will be your teacher for this morning." And guess what? After I said that I will be their teacher, my students shouted out of joy and they were all really happy. I was shocked and at the same time overwhelmed by their reaction. I guess they were all excited! We are all excited!

My topic for my first day of teaching is about metamorphosis. Before I start my lesson, we had a short ice breaker called the Penguin Dance to keep their energies up.

I started my lesson with an activity. I showed them pictures of the different life stages of a frog and asked them to guess which among is the first stage, second stage, and so on. After the activity, I discussed about metamorphosis in detail by giving and explaining the definition and also by citing a lot of examples. I showed them videos of life cycles of different animals. As they watch the videos, I can see multiple reactions from their faces. Some students look amazed, some are shocked, and some are really happy to discover the life stages of the different animals. They were so quiet and they were focused during the discussion so I did not have much problem in terms of behavior and classroom management.

After the more than half hour discussion, I asked some of my students to give a summary or to share to the class their insights and  what they have learned. For the evaluation, I let them work with a partner. I also gave them the freedom to choose their own partner. Together with their partner, I asked them to draw and label on a bond paper the life stages of an animal of their own choice. I gave them twenty to thirty minutes to do the quiz. After thirty minutes, they were able to  submit and I am very proud of my students because they made good drawings and they correctly labeled the life stages.  I was able to discover that my students are truly talented and smart!

On my next teaching demonstrations, I followed the same routine because I believe that it is effective and the results of learning are splendid. I am really happy that my students learned a lot from me. Terima kasih my sweet students! Senang bertemu denganmu! Aku berharap bisa melihatmu lagi!
